How can you get a cold when it’s 90 degrees outside? Is it Murphy’s Law that when my parents come to visit, I suddenly develop a sore throat, earache and headache? It wasn’t fair that I felt lousy on THEIR visit. I had such high hopes for the weekend and instead, they had to sit around and watch me sleeping on the couch. They’re so patient. When I finally hauled myself to bed (as opposed to the “hog all the space in the family room from the guests” couch), I turned on the Food Network to put myself to sleep. What? Am I the only person who finds cooking shows relaxing? I caught an episode of Dave Lieberman. I like this chef’s personality a lot - he’s the male version of Rachael Ray, only not so, well, spastic? He does, however, make a lot of meat dishes, so I normally just watch the preview of the upcoming recipes at the start of each episode. On this particular episode, the Blueberry Clafouti caught my attention immediately. It was so exciting to realize that I actually had all of the ingredients on hand. So, I fell asleep dreaming of breakfast.

I woke up around 6, only to find my parents wide awake drinking coffee with my husband. And I thought I’d be the first up to surprise everyone with the dish. Not quite. My mom chatted with me while I started mixing up the ingredients. It was so nice to have her there to keep me company. The dish went together so quickly, I almost wish it would have been more complicated so we could have chatted longer.

I debated over what size pan to use. In the episode, Dave clearly looks like he’s filling an 8X10 dish, but when it comes out of the oven, it seems bigger, but not 9X13. I opted for the Le Crueset pan (although I’m not sure what size that is). Looking at the recipe online, they recommend a pan “about” 8X10. I can tell I’m turning into a better cook when I happen to have an “about” 8X10 pan on hand.

Anyway, I think it turned out great. It seemed to have more blueberries than Dave’s finished product, but it was tasty! I was so proud of myself for being able to offer my family something other than Einstein bagels for breakfast. Unfortunately, I was so busy stuffing my face that I didn’t take a picture. Next time.
